History of Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe area was first inhabited by the Washoe Native American tribe. The center and heart of Washoe Native American territory, the Lake Tahoe area also included the upper valleys of the Walker, Carson, and Truckee Rivers.

The first explorers and non-indigenous people to come to Lake Tahoe were two men by the name of Lieutenant John C. Fremont and Kit Carson. Embarking on Fremont's second exploratory expedition, the two men first sighted the lake on February 14, 1844, while searching for the Bonaventura River. Lake Tahoe was first visible to the explorers from Red Lake Peak in what is presently known as the Carson Pass. Fremont designated the area as Lake Bonpland, after the French explorer and botanist Aime Jacques Alexandre Bonpland.

Another explorer by the name of John Calhoun Johnson was the first to encounter Meeks Bay in the Lake Tahoe area from a peak above the lake that he called Fallen Leaf Lake, after his Native American guide. Johnson had a government job in the west at that time, carrying mail on snowshoes from Placerville to Nevada City. Subsequently, he named the lake "Lake Bigler" after California's then governor John Bigler. The name for the lake stuck until 1862, when the U.S. Department of the Interior first introduced the name Tahoe. From that point on, both names were used for the lake. Its official and ultimate designation as Tahoe was made in 1945.

Both California and Nevada agreed to partition Lake Tahoe between the two, around the time when California became an official state. The state line ran through the middle of the lake, at 39 degrees north latitude. The state border runs in a southeastern direction, towards the Colorado River.

European civilization in the Lake Tahoe Basin first made its mark with the 1858 discovery of the Comstock Lode, a silver deposit that sits just 15 miles to the east in Virginia City, Nevada. From this point until around 1890, logging in the basin supplied big timbers to shore up the underground workings of the Comstock Lode mines.

The first inclination that Lake Tahoe would eventually serve as a prominent resort area was in 1864, with the founding of the resort community within Virginia City. The public quickly grew fond of the Lake Tahoe basin, and in the years 1912, 1913, and 1918, several congressmen attempted to designate the basin as a national park, but were unsuccessful.
