The Lake

The second deepest lake in the United States, Lake Tahoe has a maximum depth of 1,645 feet and is the twelfth deepest lake in the world. At 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, the lake boasts 72 miles of breathtaking shoreline. Nearly two-thirds of the shoreline area is located in California, and the rest is in beautiful Nevada. The surface area of the lake covers about 191 square miles.

The south shore of Lake Tahoe is largely dominated by the lake’s largest city, which is South Lake Tahoe in California. This adjoins Tahoe Incline, NV at the town of Stateline, Nevada. Tahoe City, California is situated at the lake’s northwest shore. There are several highways that run within view of the lakeshore for much of Tahoe’s boundary, but several important parts of the shoreline are located within state parks, or are protected by the United States Forest Service.

Nearly two million years ago, a geologic block faulted and the Lake Tahoe Basin was formed. A geologic block fault is a break in the earth’s crust that ultimately causes blocks of land to move up or down. Carson Range on the east and the Sierra Nevada on the west were created by uplifted blocks while down-dropped blocks created the Lake Tahoe Basin in between.

The Lake Tahoe basin was formed by a series of large down-to-the-east normal faults, which include the West Tahoe-Dollar Point fault, Stateline/North Tahoe fault, and the Incline Village fault.

At the time of the natural creation of Lake Tahoe, the highest peaks of the basin that were formed are Freel Peak at 10,891 feet, Monument Peak at 10,067 feet, Pyramid Peak at 9,983 feet, and Mount Tallac at 9,735 feet. A dam was formed on the north side of the lake by eruptions from the now extinct volcano Mount Pluto. Snow melted and filled the southern and lowest part of the basin to form the actual Lake Tahoe. Additional water from rain and runoff contributed to the forming of the lake as well. Several streams flow into Lake Tahoe, but the lake is drained only by the Truckee River, which flows northeast through Tahoe Incline, NV and Reno, into Pyramid Lake.

Precipitation in Tahoe Incline, NV Real Estate ranges from over 55 inches in watersheds on the west side of the basin to about 26 inches near the lake on the east side of the basin. Snow falls in the area between the months of November and April. The highest average temperature is 78.7 degrees F in the summer and an average low temperature of 39.8 degrees F in January.

Tahoe homeowners are encouraged to use Best Management Practices (BMPs) to manage watershed and prevent polluted runoff from reaching the Lake.
